What’s The Big Deal About Goals?
Why are goals important?
You may be an avid goal-setter, or you may have never set a single goal in your life.
We’re going to look at why goals are important in our lives.
Let’s dissect them, talk about them and look at what our goals are for our lives.
What are the goals for your life? Why is it a big deal to have goals? Why do we talk about them? Do you even know how to set them?
I used to hate setting goals. I worked in an industry where we had goals imposed upon us. Those weren’t really my goals, those were company objectives. Those were demands to reach certain imposed levels of success. Those are something completely different from goals. When someone imposes something on you, that’s not your goal.
Let’s look at why we even set goals.
Setting goals involves some mindset exploration and figuring out why your goals are important to you. You are here for a purpose and you have the opportunity to figure out your purpose, live it out and be the most magnificent you that you were created to be.
And with that comes some ways to know when you are hitting certain marks, when you are achieving and when you are being that most amazing you that you were created to be. We call those things goals.
When I was a young mother with a bunch of small children, sometimes my goal was to just get through the day. Sometimes the goal was let’s get everyone out the door with two socks and two matching shoes on, and they don’t have stuff dribbling down them.
Now it’s just me and my husband, and we are empty nesters, and our goals have shifted. We are more focused on our businesses. It’s ok that your goals change as you go through the different seasons of your life.
Do you know about SMART goals? These are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. SMART goals work for a lot of people. They don’t work so much for me. I use Danielle LaPorte’s methods as described in The Desire Map. However, SMART goals work for a lot of people, so we are going to talk about them in future blogs.
I really set my goals based on how I want to feel, how I want to show up in the world, how I want to be in the world. I set a goal for me personally that I do FB lives 2 times every week. Sometimes I don’t feel like getting up and doing everything that it takes to do my lives. I committed to the goal, I committed to my followers and community, I’ve committed to me and that commitment motivates me to reach that goal every week. I show up. I feel really good about myself when I have achieved that goal.
Another goal I set this year is that this year is my year of Adventure. Adventure is part of my goals. I love the feeling I have when I have adventures. That means we go to Balloon Festivals, or Polo Matches, to the beach, a Naval Airshow, or to a special restaurant 100 miles away to sit on the deck overlooking the lake at sunset.
Goals can look different for you in the different areas of your life. Think about this: How do I want to feel? How do I want to show up in my life? What do I want in my life? Don’t look around and say “They’re that, I want to be that too.”
We are all unique. We get to make our own goals.
This week spend some time thinking about what you want to get out of life, and what you want to bring to life. And think about building your goals around those things.
To summarize: Goals are never something that someone imposes upon you— those are directives and objectives. Those aren’t your goals. Companies that give us “goals”—those aren’t goals, those are directives. Goals are things you set for yourself to help you live your life, and be the most wonderful you that you can be.
Soon, we’ll talk about SMART goals and what exactly those are, and we’ll talk about building goals around your desires.
I’m here to help you live the life you love and live abundantly with well being! See you soon!
